With the increasingly warm weather, education on being sun safe, the shrinking of the average size backyard, an increase in medium density and high density living, increases in real estate prices and focus on getting ‘time out’ from technology, the creation of outdoor rooms has significantly increased as Australians find a new way to enjoy their backyards and be outside.
In 2015 these Top 3 Outdoor Room trends are set to dominate as we rediscover the great Outdoors.
1. The new Family Room With longer work hours than previous generations, and technology dominating both our work and leisure time, enjoying the outdoors can sometimes be viewed as a distant memory rather than a regular activity. A new movement called ‘screen free time’ is emerging, where people are actively seeking out activities that don’t involve smart phones, TVs or tablets. These activities offer the opportunity to reconnect with family and friends without the distractions of technology. A trend that is evolving from ‘screen free time’ is creating the Outdoor Family Room. This provides a safe environment for children to play away from technology, and is an easy welcoming location for the family to reconnect.
2. Organic Edible Gardens Made famous by recent reality TV shows, The Block and My House Rules, this trend is set to dominate in 2015. No other space in the house can be so multifunctional. This is a great opportunity to not only enjoy eating organically, but have the reward of growing it yourself. It also doubles as a great family activity that can even inspire the most stubborn of children to eat vegetables. Nothing tastes as good as what you grow yourself! If you’re looking for inspiration on creating your organic edible garden.
3. The New Home Office Technology is enabling more flexible work arrangements and more people than ever before are being able to work from home. This trend is set to continue in 2015. With the event of Bluetooth, Wireless Hot Spots and Broadband, a new twist on this is venturing into the back yard. Setting yourself up with a quality desk, chair and good shelter, you can not only do quality work from home, you can enjoy the fresh air and surrounds of your outdoor living space too.
